RTL's exclusive three-part series on Luxembourg's Special Police Unit has drawn international attention, with US military veteran and YouTuber Theo Boyrié analysing the unit's training, tactics, and equipment in a recent reaction video.
It took RTL seven years to gain exclusive access to the police special unit, known as the USP. In early 2024, journalist Dan Wiroth was finally able to provide an inside look, documenting his experience over eight days in a three-part series exploring the unit's operations and training.
One of the international viewers was Theo Boyrié, an active member of the US Army and former infantryman in the Marine Corps' Close-Quarters Battle unit. Boyrié runs the Combat Arms Channel on YouTube where he reacts to videos showcasing foreign military and special forces. He recently analysed RTL's report on Luxembourg's USP.
In his reaction video, Boyrié focuses on the USP's equipment, training, and key responsibilities, including tactical operations, negotiations, and protective measures. He particularly highlights the unit's "progressive" vehicles, weapons, and training methods.
Drawing from his own experience with similar equipment, he discusses the challenges and appeal of working in high-stakes tactical environments. He also praises the production quality of RTL's report, noting that it enhances the storytelling and engagement.
The SPU was founded in 1979, when the mobile Gendarmerie group was created following the terrorist attacks at the Olympic Games in Munich. In Luxembourg at the time, public safety was at an all-time low, with the ongoing Bomber's Affair and Gang of Waldbillig.
