The death of a Welsh mountain biker in the French Alps has left the community where he worked "traumatised".

Marc Sutton, 34, who owned a restaurant in the ski resort of Les Gets, Haute-Savoie, was shot dead by a hunter on Saturday .

Mr Sutton, who was from Caerphilly , died while mountain biking in woods near Montriond in the French Alps on Saturday evening as he sped through "thick" woodland in fading light.

Chrissy Jahier, who has lived in the area for three years, said Mr Sutton's death has rocked the community.

She said: "We are a very close community - everyone is traumatised by it.

"I know a lot of down hill bikers and it could have been any one [who was shot].

"A friend of mine was at the top of the mountain with Marc but just happened to go the other way."

The young hunter, who reportedly went into "deep shock" after realising he had hit Mr Sutton, is now being investigated on suspicion of "aggravated manslaughter".

Chrissy said the community is now desperate to change the hunting rules in the area.

She said: "So the rules currently are that hunting is allowed five out of seven days including Saturday and Sunday.

"There are two things we want to change. We want the areas that are free of hunting to be increased meaning it will include the area where Marc was shot.

"We also want to increase the amount of days where there is not hunting. On Saturday and Sunday we would like to have no hunting after lunchtime so only in the morning and people can not drink and they go out.

"I can only speak for our area but I think a lot of people in the Alps can relate to this.

"It wasn’t a big concern in the community until today. The bikers are aware of them but the tourists are not.

"This place is flooded with tourists and they think the have the place to themselves.

"There are places at the tops of the hiking routes and mountains where there are no signs.

"A similar case happened more than a year ago. A trail runner was shot by a hunter. They changed the law in that area and that gives me hope we can change it and ask for more.

"We have to work on this together with the hunters. It is their area as well and their hobby."

In Saturday's incident, up to 18 people were taking part in a hunt when Mr Sutton sped down a wooded path on his bike, according to The Mirror .

According to French news website Le Dauphine , the mayor of Montriond Georges Lagrange announced a temporary ban of the practice of hunting in the area.

A spokesperson for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office told WalesOnline: "We are in contact with the local authorities about the death of a British man in France, and we are providing assistance to his family."
