Portillo's building a restaurant in Hendricks County

Portillo's is famous for its Italian beef sandwich, but be careful how you order it.

Portillo's is bringing its Italian beef and Chicago-style hot dogs to Avon.

The restaurant chain's third Central Indiana location will be built on the site of an former Sears hardware store near Ronald Reagan Parkway and U.S. 36, said Jodi Dickey, Avon's planning and building director.

Crews are demolishing the one-time Sears building, Dickey said. It will be replaced with an 8,000-square-foot restaurant with a drive-through.

Rendering of the new Portillo’s in Avon will be located at Rockville and Ronald Reagan in the former location of Sears Hardware.

Portillo's hopes to start construction next month, Dickey said.

The popular restaurant opened its first Indianapolis area location in Fishers in September.

It is close to completing its second area location, a 9,000-square-foot restaurant on U.S. 31 near East Stop 11 Road in southern Marion County. The Greenwood area location is scheduled to open in the fall.
