Rainer Becker's new restaurant will be a cheaper version of Zuma aimed at millennials

Discerning London diners often force restaurants to go upmarket but the rise of street food is changing attitudes, restaurateur Rainer Becker said today.

Becker, co-founder of celebrity haunts Zuma and Roka, is opening Inko Nito, a new “edgy” and “cheaper” version of his Japanese-inspired robata grill restaurants, in Soho next month.

The chef said he had intended Roka — where a meal for two now costs £150 to £200 — to be a mid-market alternative to Knightsbridge hotspot Zuma when it opened back in 2004. But he said Roka diners “demanded more” and so he began to offer caviar and other more expensive options, leading to sister branches in Aldwych, Canary Wharf and Mayfair.

Becker hopes Inko Nito will remain lower priced, with dishes starting at £11, as it is aimed at creative millennials who will try unusual, cheaper menus.

The restaurant will open in early May on Broadwick Street.
