There's plenty of choice for anyone looking to eat out in Cambridge, with a wide range of cuisines and flavours to suit any taste.

It's also an ever-changing scene, with new venues popping up on a regular basis right across the city.

In Cambridge 2017 was undoubtedly the year of the burger, with Steak and Honour , Honest Burger and Chosen Bun all among the new restaurants opening their doors.

Other new additions included a second Stem + Glory vegan cafe, while Cambridge also welcomed its first 'Bubble Waffle' cafe.

Drinkers were well-served too, with the Station Tavern, Cambridge's newest pub, opening at the new-look Station Square, while on Mitcham's Corner The Waterman reopened after an extensive redevelopment.

But what does 2018 have in store? We've already seen the launch of Indian street-food restaurant The Tiffin Truck on Regent Street, and Histon is set to welcome a new French-style brasserie, at the revamped Boot Inn.

Meanwhile The Ivy will bring a touch of London sophistication to Trinity Street, while TV chef Tristan Welch will reveal the long-awaited Parker's Tavern, at the new University Arms Hotel.

But as well as those we already know about, we're sure there will be lots more changes still to come over the year.

To keep track, we're going to be listing all the new bars, pubs and restaurants that open in Cambridge across the coming year.

Time Line

Bars, cafes and restaurants that opened in 2018

  1. The Tiffin Truck

    The team behind popular Indian restaurant Navadhanya opened their second eatery on Regent Street in January.

    Inspired by the Indian tiffin street food tradition, it offers lunchtime deliveries and dining for lunch and evenings.

  2. The Boot, Histon

    The former village pub received a new lease of life in February, when it was revamped and reopened as a French-style brasserie, under the ownership of Raymond Blanc's White Brasserie Company.

  3. Carriages

    Built on a restored Victorian train, Carriages promises high tea with a difference.

    Based just off the A14 at Fen Drayton, it runs on bookings only, and can seat up to 100 diners.

  4. Tabanco

    A taste of Spain arrived on Green street back in March, when the Tabanco tapas bar opened its doors.

    It's run by Tim Luther and Nigel Howell, who already own the popular Drakes Tabanco in London.

  5. The Ivy Cambridge Brasserie

    Branching out from its famous London flagship, Cambridge's very own Ivy restaurant opened on Trinity Street in March.

    With a kitchen run by Prince Charles' former personal chef and a beautiful interior redesign, it hopes to become a mainstay for locals and visitors alike.

  6. Restaurant 22

    The Chesterton Road eatery reopened in March, under new owners Alexandra Olivier and Samuel Carter.

    A former member of Gordon Ramsay's kitchen team, he describes his food as "creative seasonal British with a twist, exciting and inventive but delicious and fulfilling."

  7. The Carpenter's Arms

    The Victoria Road pub reopened under new management at the end of March, as a 'Pizza, Pots and Pints', pub, run by Salisbury Arms owner Charles Wells.

  8. Lagona Bakery

    The owner's of Cambridge's first Lebanese restaurant opened their new cafe a short distance away on Mill Road, in April.

    Alongside traditional sweet and savoury pastries, the shop also offers honey from the London Honey Company, loose leaf and tea bags from Kanuka plus dried fruits and nuts.

  9. Café Foy

    Located right on the riverside opposite Magdalene College, Foy opened its doors in April with a limited menu of stacked toasted sandwiches and fancy Scotch eggs.

    It hopes to expand its offerings further over the coming weeks.

  10. The Old Ticket Office

    The newest addition to the Station Square complex, the aptly-named pub opened at the former ticketing depot in July.

    It was restored and opened by the City Pub Group, which owns several pubs across the city, including the Cambridge Brewhouse, the Mill and Waterman.

  11. Franco Manca

    The sourdough pizza specialist opened on Market Hill in July, at the site of the former West Cornwall Pasty Co.

    Founded in Brixton in 1983, the firm specialises in 'artisan' pizzas, and now has outlets all over the country.

  12. Creams

    This dessert-only restaurant opened in the Cambridge Leisure Park on July 15.

    It's the perfect place to indulge your sweet tooth, serving a huge array of sundaes, crepes, milkshakes waffles and more.

    Get ready for a sugar rush!

  13. Ony's

    This Mill Road wine bar opened its doors in July.

    It serves Mediterranean small plates with an Egyptian twist to accompany the drinks.

  14. Amelie

    The first addition to the Grafton centre's new-look food court opened in August.

    The fast and furious dining spot serves flammekueche - a flatbread dish which is a bit like pizza and a bit like bruschetta, that originates in the Alsace region of France.

  15. Kebabish

    The latest addition to Mill Road, Kebabish opened in August at the site of the former Rocker's Steakhouse.

    Serving traditional Indo-Pakistani cuisine, it is part of a growing chain with over 100 restaurants across the country, and also offers takeaway and delivery options.

  16. Parker's Tavern

    After building work lasting years, Parker's Tavern, the new restaurant at the revamped University Arms hotel opened in August.

    Head chef Tristram Welch has said he wants to keep it “as local as possible”, and hopes to highlight the best of British cuisine using regionally-sourced produce and historic recipes.

  17. 5 Blends Coffee House

    Mill Road's newest coffee shop opened at the former Cambridge Wine Merchants branch at the end of August.

    It serves (unsurprisingly) five different types of coffee, as well as hot and cold sandwiches and paninis.

  18. Ben's Cookies

    This outlet selling tasty treats opened in Market Street in September.

    This is the 15th Ben's Cookies shop it the country. It sells soft-baked cookies in flavours including milk chocolate chunk, white chocolate and macadamia and double chocolate.

  19. Pizza1889

    This bright blue shipping container popped up on Cambridge Leisure Park in September.

    It serves authentic stone-baked pizzas cooked in an oven inside the shipping container restaurant.

  20. 80s Karaoke

    The name gives it away - this is Cambridge's new karaoke bar.

    If your life has been lacking a place to belt out 'I Will Always Love You' in front of a bunch of tipsy friends, the wait was over at last in September.

    The Hills Road bar serves drinks and American-themed fast food - but you can also bring your own drinks, with no corkage fee.

  21. Vinyl

    September was a bumper month for Cambridge nightlife, with retro club Vinyl also opening.

    The nightclub, in the Sidney Street venue formerly occupied by Kuda, will be playing retro hits from the 80s, 90s and 00s.

  22. The Cambridge Oven

    The Cambridge Oven is run by a former nurse Jolita Durrant, who learnt the art of baking from her grandmother.

    The bakery opened in November and among its creations is the Cruffin - half croissant, half muffin. We can't wait to try it.
