A generous restaurant now allows diners to work for the food they may have eaten once it’s confirmed that they have no money to settle their bills.

The restaurant operators say they want to make sure that all passersby get to eat well and so offers the option to pay for meals by doing a 50-minute shift.

What this translates into is that you can barter for your dinner by offering up your labour.

“I used this system because I want to connect with hungry people who couldn’t otherwise eat at restaurants because they don’t have money,” owner Sekai Kobayashi explains.

He says he opened up the eatery in 2015 with the aim of creating “a place where everyone is welcome and everyone fits in.”

The restaurant can only accommodate 12 diners at a time, and patrons can ‘pay’ for their meals by rendering duties such as washing plates, serving meals or clearing tables.

Of course, those who have the means can still pay cash for their meals.

So far, more than 500 people have opted to work for their dinner.

The caveat: the restaurant is only currently available at Mirai Shokudo, in Chiyoga area of Tokyo.

So, you need a visa and a return ticket to go enjoy the meal of your life!
