Cause of Lang's Cafe fire unknown, not being treated as suspicious

Fire investigators have been unable to determine what caused the blaze that destroyed Lang’s Cafe, but have ruled out arson.

The Vietnamese restaurant burned down during the early morning of April 4. Several neighbouring businesses on the 1700 block of Broad Street were also damaged, including Wonderland Entertainment Centre and Miyosiwin Salon Spa.

Investigators brought in heavy equipment to move rubble and debris while they examined the scene. They concluded the fire started in a storage room in the back corner of the building’s main floor, but the severe damage prevented them from finding a cause.

Randy Ryba, a fire marshal with Regina Fire and Protective Services, said no combustible materials were found that could have given investigators a clue as to what started the fire.

“When buildings get ravaged to that point, sometimes there just is not enough to look at,” he said.

Ryba said there is nothing to suggest the fire was suspicious.
