Ronald Burton arrested after 48-hour manhunt

The Allegheny County Sheriff's fugitive squad arrested Ronald Burton, 26, on the 2400 block of McCarrell Street in McKeesport on Wednesday night.Police said Burton was taken into custody "without incident" at 9:15 p.m.Burton was the Wendy's employee wanted in the shooting inside the restaurant at Edgewood Towne Centre on Monday evening.The shooting happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday. Police said Burton fired the shot during a confrontation with the victim in the dining area and then fled.Paramedics rushed the victim, Andrew Johnson Jr, to UPMC Mercy Hospital for surgery. At last report, he was in critical condition. Police said the victim is expected to live.According to the criminal complaint, Burton told police that Johnson approached him from behind Monday night inside the restaurant. Burton said he believed Johnson was motioning to pull a gun from his waist band to shoot Burton, so Burton pulled his own gun out and fired at Burton first. Police said surveillance video showed both men reaching toward their waistbands prior to the shooting. It's not clear if Johnson had a gun. Police said Burton told them the shooting was entirely in self defense and that he had taken the gun from his girlfriend without her knowledge. Police said Burton told them he threw the gun away in a wooded area near the Triangle Sub Shop in Swissvale. According the criminal complaint, the gun was not located after a search of that area. Police said Burton pleaded guilty to a 2010 weapons offense, which prohibited him from owning a gun.He was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, and tampering with evidence.Burton will be in the Allegheny County Jail awaiting arraignment.“Mr. Burton just told me that he wants people to understand that he did not go to work to harm anyone. He was trying to provide for his family and that he acted 100 percent in self defense," said Burton's defense attorney, Blaine Jones.
